Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is a tribute to the early days of cinema, emphasizing the magic and preservation of film history. The film prioritizes the mechanics of wonder and historical continuity over contemporary identity issues or the disruption of social hierarchies. Operating within a traditional Eurocentric framework, the film focuses on a historical context without significant engagement with diverse identities. While it showcases technical sophistication, it does not delve deeply into the intersection of various identities or challenge systemic power structures. Ultimately, the narrative is a child-centric adventure celebrating the magic of cinema. It emphasizes historical lineage and personal connections to the past over progressive representation.
