The film stands out by shifting the focus from traditional patriarchal authority to a matriarchal, community-driven framework. It centers the ability to act of Black women to critique oppressive structures in the mid-century American South. By avoiding including someone from a minority group without giving them real depth, the narrative presents a sophisticated ecosystem of Black female leadership. This approach provides a nuanced look at systemic racial dynamics during the Jim Crow era. While the film excels in gender and racial representation, it lacks explicit visibility regarding LGBTQ+ identities. The focus remains primarily on racial and maternal healing.
