Mariano Bartolomeu’s film is a sophisticated allegory that uses individual mental instability to reflect the sociopolitical turmoil of post-independence Angola. By blending reality and fantasy, the narrative challenges conventional storytelling and explores the fragmentation of national identity. The film effectively deconstructs the traditional heroic male archetype through a fragile protagonist. It also highlights the protagonist's struggles with fatherhood, which undermines traditional masculine authority. While the film offers strong cultural depth and a non-Western perspective, it remains limited in its exploration of diverse sexual identities. The representation of disability is central to the plot but remains tied to the protagonist's personal crisis.
