António de Macedo’s drama functions as a psychological study of the tension between human instincts and religious dogma. It deconstructs idealized piety by focusing on the breakdown of a sacred vow through the lens of repressed desire. The film’s strength lies in its subversion of social hierarchies and the portrayal of female autonomy. By positioning the protagonist’s internal struggle against the rigidity of a traditionalist village, the work explores moral relativism and the dangers of communal superstition. However, the film is limited by its homogeneous setting and lack of diverse identities, offering little representation for racial or LGBTQ+ communities.
