For 17 years, filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt filmed his daughter Ella on her birthday in the same spot, asking her the same questions. In just 29 minutes, we watch her grow from a toddler to a young woman with all the beautiful and sometimes awkward stages in between. Each phase is captured fleetingly but makes an indelible mark. Her responses to her father’s questions are just a backdrop for a deeper story of parental love, acceptance, and ultimately, independence.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

AI Analysis
Jay Rosenblatt’s documentary offers a profound, longitudinal look at human growth through the lens of a single family. By capturing seventeen years of a daughter's life, the film moves beyond simple observation to explore the organic evolution of identity and agency. The work excels in its centering of female autonomy, portraying a transition from childhood dependence to adult independence. It avoids patriarchal structures, focusing instead on the internal landscape of the protagonist. However, the film's intimate, domestic scope limits its broader intersectional reach. The narrow focus on a single family unit results in a lack of racial and multicultural diversity.
