Aurora provides a poignant character study centered on a vulnerable female protagonist. By exploring the Russian-American experience and the intersection of Soviet and American identities, the film offers a non-Western perspective on human vulnerability. However, the film relies heavily on traditional sentimentalism. It often leans into the 'tragic victim' narrative regarding the protagonist's medical condition and uses spiritualist clichés rather than progressive social critique. While the film disrupts some standard hero clichés by making a child the emotional anchor, it lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ or non-binary identities, keeping its scope relatively narrow.
