Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.5/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film operates within a strictly heteronormative framework. The plot focuses exclusively on the marital bond between the two leads, offering no queer subtext or non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Limited

While Shivani is the central figure, her agency is limited by her vulnerability to supernatural trauma. Amit occupies the traditional role of protector, reinforcing conventional domestic hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The cast is culturally homogeneous, reflecting a specific urban Mumbai setting. It avoids Western casting standards but does not actively seek to introduce intersectional racial dynamics.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative relies on traditionalist frameworks and religious rituals to resolve conflict. It presents the nuclear family as a stable ideal within established social norms.

Disability Representation

Minimal

Psychological distress is used primarily as a horror trope to build suspense. There is no meaningful portrayal of neurodivergence beyond the lens of supernatural affliction.

Strengths

  • The film provides a localized, culturally specific setting that accurately reflects an urban Mumbai environment.
  • It avoids the imposition of Western casting standards or whitewashing within its genre framework.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film relies on gendered tropes that position the female lead as a victim of trauma rather than an active agent.
  • Mental instability is framed through supernatural affliction, which risks stigmatizing psychological distress.
  • The narrative lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative relational structures.
  • The story adheres to traditionalist frameworks, offering no deconstruction of established social or religious institutions.

AI Analysis

Bhoot is a conventional horror exercise that prioritizes genre tropes over the subversion of social hierarchies. The narrative architecture reinforces traditional domestic roles and relies on standard cultural frameworks. The film lacks intersectional complexity, focusing on a singular moral and cosmological order. It functions as a localized piece that mirrors its specific socioeconomic environment without challenging it. Ultimately, the work offers little progressive social commentary, adhering instead to the established social norms of its time and place.
