Michael Powell’s film occupies a transitional space in cinematic history. It lacks intersectional diversity regarding race and LGBTQ+ identity, remaining rooted in a specific European social context. However, it achieves a moderate progressive score by subverting traditional gendered power dynamics. The film's strength lies in its rejection of conservative moral absolutism. By focusing on individual psychological agency, it moves away from the enforcement of traditional societal norms in favor of exploring human intimacy.
