Capistrano's Bells operates as a traditional period drama rooted in the cinematic conventions of the 1930s. While the plot uses a conflict between a tyrannical governor and a rebel leader, the narrative structure relies heavily on established clichés. The film features a female protagonist who actively influences the plot, yet her motivations are framed through sacrifice and emotional connections rather than challenging gender hierarchies. This keeps the story within a conventional framework that assumes everyone is straight and cisgender. Although the colonial setting offers a backdrop for discussing systemic oppression, the focus remains on individual sentimentality. The lack of specific character details regarding race or disability limits the film's depth in reflecting multiple aspects of diversity.
