Bread and Chocolate is a powerful post-colonial film that uses its ensemble to challenge Western-centric viewpoints. By centering the lives of Black characters, the film effectively critiques the power imbalances inherent in European consumerism and colonial legacies. However, the film’s impact is somewhat limited due to its narrow demographic focus. The narrative is predominantly male-centric and lacks representation for LGBTQ+ individuals or people with disabilities, reducing the overall diversity profile. Ultimately, the film succeeds as a social critique. It transforms the struggle for economic survival into a profound commentary on how capitalist institutions exclude and oppress underrepresented populations.
