Supermensch is a sophisticated character study that elevates unconventional, individualistic behaviors to the level of high art. It challenges traditional professionalism by celebrating Shep Gordon's ability to navigate the Hollywood machine through charisma and social engineering. The film successfully integrates LGBTQ+ icons into the professional narrative, avoiding the treatment of these figures as outsiders. Instead, it weaves them into the historical narrative of the music industry. However, the documentary remains tied to the male-dominated hierarchies of the late 20th century. While it captures a diverse array of musical icons, the focus on elite celebrity culture can sometimes obscure broader systemic racial and gender dynamics.

The documentary recognizes the impact of Black artists by featuring icons like Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass. However, the focus remains on the upper echelons of the entertainment industry.
The film celebrates a philosophy of experiential hedonism and personal empowerment. It portrays Shep Gordon's unconventional methods as a sophisticated art form used to circumvent traditional institutional or religious norms.
