Alabama's Ghost operates as a conventional 1970s genre piece, prioritizing supernatural thrills and individualistic social climbing over diverse representation. The narrative structure is built around a singular male protagonist's ascent from janitor to magician. While the film incorporates non-Western motifs like voodoo into its horror framework, these elements risk being used as superficial horror clichés rather than meaningful cultural depictions. The lack of ability to act for underrepresented groups suggests a traditional approach to storytelling. Ultimately, the film lacks depth in reflecting multiple aspects of identity, focusing instead on the consequences of meddling with metaphysical boundaries and the pursuit of social prominence.
