New Showbiz Analysis

Dietmar Brehm’s *Party* is an experimental montage that prioritizes formalist exploration over character-driven storytelling. Because the film functions as a hallucinatory matrix of disparate footage, it lacks the traditional protagonists necessary to measure multi-layered identity or ability to act. The film excels in its structural approach to racial and ethnic diversity. By integrating international sources from Russia, Japan, and America, it avoids a singular cultural perspective and creates a globalized media experience. However, the abstract nature of the work limits its ability to represent specific social identities. The focus on sensory dissonance and fragmented imagery means that gender, sexuality, and disability are treated as aesthetic elements rather than lived human experiences.

Category Breakdown

Does Party have LGBTQ+ representation?

Fair

The film's fragmented, found-footage structure breaks down traditional assumptions that everyone is straight or cisgender. However, there is no clear evidence of specific LGBTQ+ narratives or character identities.

How does Party portray gender?

Fair

By presenting body parts as abstract optical elements, the film deconstructs traditional gender roles. However, the lack of distinct characters prevents any active challenge to gender hierarchies.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Party?

Good

The work achieves high global inclusion by blending Russian, Japanese, and American footage. This synthesis disrupts a singular cultural dominance in favor of a non-Western-centric sensory experience.

How does Party represent religion and culture?

Good

The film rejects traditional Western narrative order through a hallucinatory, postmodern lens. It prioritizes abstract sensory experiences over institutional or religious stability.

Does Party include disability representation?

Minimal

The mention of non-functioning body parts remains ambiguous. It is unclear if this serves as a metaphorical cinematic tool or a literal representation of physical disability.

Present on Screen

  • High levels of globalized inclusion through the intentional blending of Russian, Japanese, and American footage.
  • Disrupts cultural hegemony by synthesizing diverse international artifacts into a non-Western-centric experience.
  • Deconstructs traditional gender roles by treating the human form as abstract, non-functional optical elements.

Limited or Absent

  • Lacks specific character identities, making it impossible to observe intentional LGBTQ+ representation.
  • The absence of distinct, gendered characters prevents meaningful subversion of social hierarchies.
  • Ambiguity regarding the depiction of body parts makes it difficult to assess disability representation.

Official Synopsis

Sometimes I film so that the actors seem to belong to the undead. The construction of the Found-Footage-Party shows Russian, Japanese, American and my own material which is hallucinated into a matrix in which functioning and non-functioning body parts appear as optical lubricant whilst simultaneously we hear someone shaving.
