Roger Vadim’s work challenges mid-century social mores by prioritizing eroticism and the deconstruction of bourgeois morality. The film succeeds in presenting a complex view of women's ability to drive the story, using the sisters to challenge the cliché of the passive victim during wartime. However, the film is limited by its narrow demographic scope. It lacks racial and LGBTQ+ diversity, reflecting the specific historical and social constraints of its 1944 European setting. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its narrative structure. It uses a corrupt systemic framework to critique institutionalized power and explore moral relativism.
