Manhattan by Numbers is a character-driven exploration of urban fragmentation and economic desperation. Its strength lies in its setting and critique of systemic pressures, presenting a diverse, non-homogeneous environment. However, the film is limited by its narrow focus on the male experience. It lacks meaningful representation for LGBTQ+ individuals and characters with disabilities, adhering to traditional narrative structures regarding identity and ability to act. Ultimately, the film succeeds as a postmodern look at the individual's struggle against the city, despite failing to provide broad representation across all identity categories.
