Two lads in Edinburgh embark on a non-violent spree of robberies. They dress up in clown masks and act as modern highwaymen, robbing coach loads of tourists in the highlands. In the process they become folk heroes to the locals. Their adventures make for a whimsical and gentle comedy, in the Bill Forsyth vein.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ narratives or non-cisnormative identities. Character dynamics focus on traditional male camaraderie without subverting heteronormative structures.
Gender Representation
The plot is driven by male-centric agency and the bond between the two protagonists. Female characters occupy secondary positions within conventional roles that do not challenge patriarchal structures.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
Casting Pakistani actor Ayub Khan in a historical Scottish setting disrupts expected homogeneity. This choice expands the visual and cultural scope of the period piece.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative critiques Western institutions by portraying the British state as an oppressive force. It frames the struggle of the peasantry against imperial control through a post-colonial lens.
Disability Representation
There is no significant evidence of visible or invisible disability representation. Characters with disabilities are not utilized as central plot devices.

AI Analysis
Restless Natives is a comedic deconstruction of authority that finds its strength in subverting historical racial expectations. By including diverse casting in an 18th-century setting, the film avoids the typical homogeneity of the genre. However, the film remains limited by traditional gender hierarchies and a lack of representation for LGBTQ+ identities or disabilities. The narrative focus stays tightly locked on male-driven action and camaraderie. Ultimately, the film's score is elevated by its anti-establishment themes and its willingness to challenge the visual norms of historical period dramas.
