New Showbiz Analysis

Die Musterknaben is a character-driven comedy that highlights the dysfunction within a rigid hierarchy. By showing incompetent authorities, the film avoids the cliché of perfect, infallible heroes. However, it lacks deep exploration of multiple aspects of identity, focusing instead on a narrow, male-centric professional struggle.

Present on Screen

  • Challenges the idea of perfectly competent authority figures by depicting police institutions as ineffective and chaotic.
  • Highlights the flaws in traditional masculinity by presenting protagonists as inept rather than stoic leaders.

Limited or Absent

  • Needs more significant female character development and roles where women can drive the narrative.
  • Could benefit from more representation of LGBTQ+ identities and stories that challenge the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender.
  • Would improve by showcasing a broader range of racial and ethnic diversity within its urban setting.

Official Synopsis

Docker and Dretzke are two police officers from Cologne. But the cases here in the precinct don't win them a flower pot at the CID. And so they find themselves at the bottom of the career ladder. When they are assigned by the Düsseldorf State Office of Criminal Investigation to work the night shift on an apartment where drugs are presumably being dealt during the day, they discover more than their Düsseldorf colleagues had planned...
