Jeremy Herrin’s production brings modern relevance to Shakespeare’s work by breaking down traditional hierarchies. It incorporates queer-coded performances and post-colonial perspectives to challenge established clichés. The film stands out for its deliberate casting choices, especially those highlighting gender fluidity and multiculturalism. These selections turn the play into a nuanced exploration of systemic control and identity. While the production advances the conversation on disability, it still adheres to certain traditional literary representations of physical difference.
Category Breakdown
Casting Ariel as a non-binary or gender-fluid character challenges traditional gender roles. The supernatural elements of the character are used to critique assumptions that everyone fits into binary gender categories.
Miranda is shown to have significant influence rather than being just a love interest. She challenges the patriarchal control of Prospero by demonstrating her own strength and intelligence.
The cast includes actors from diverse backgrounds, moving away from traditionally homogeneous casts. Caliban's character explores themes of displacement and colonial rule, reflecting post-colonial perspectives.
The narrative questions the legitimacy of Western institutions and power structures. Caliban’s portrayal critiques the idea of Western civilization as a civilizing mission.
Caliban's physical differences are presented as a result of the power dynamics on the island, rather than simply as a caricature. However, his depiction still ties into traditional literary ways of showing disability as social exclusion.
