Steven Okazaki’s documentary offers a gritty, systemic critique of the addiction recovery industry. It moves away from the standard redemptive arc to focus on the friction between individual ability to act and commercialized medical structures. The film succeeds by providing a multi-ethnic, multi-layered view of social exclusion. It treats the subjects' struggles with medical and social complexity rather than using them as emotional plot devices. While the work lacks specific focus on LGBTQ+ or gender-specific portrayals, it excels in its anti-capitalist perspective. It effectively dismantles the 'hero's journey' to show how systemic failures impact diverse populations.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on the immediate realities of substance dependency. There is no prominent or centralized focus on LGBTQ+ narratives, making representation incidental rather than intentional.
Men and women are presented through a lens of shared vulnerability. The film avoids traditional gender hierarchies by showing how addiction destabilizes roles like provider or protector.
The cast reflects the multi-ethnic reality of the American addiction crisis. This demographic realism avoids the homogeneous norms often found in mainstream depictions of recovery.
The documentary critiques Western institutions and the profit motives of treatment centers. It portrays the family unit as fragmented, prioritizing systemic critique over traditionalist ideals.
Addiction is treated as a complex neurobiological and psychological reality. The film avoids inspiration porn by depicting the cyclical nature of relapse and mental health challenges.

Official Synopsis
Camp Recovery, located in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, Cal., features a mix of new and long-term addicts, most of whom stay for 30 days (the maximum allowed by most insurance companies). Rehab chronicles their experiences in the center and follows them out into the less-supervised, far more dangerous, "real" world, riding the emotional tidal waves that accompany incremental progress and devastating relapses. The film offers a rare insider's look at the ups and downs of each addict's journey to stay clean.
