Jože Babič’s drama examines regionalism and class tension within the Yugoslav context. It avoids simplistic cultural portrayals, instead highlighting the systemic friction between various ethnic and economic groups. The film's key strength lies in its exploration of internal migration and the exclusion of laborers. By focusing on workers from less developed regions, it provides a meaningful commentary on national identity. However, the film adheres closely to the social norms of its time. It lacks contemporary markers of gender subversion or LGBTQ+ representation, focusing instead on the traditional struggles of a transient male workforce.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include explicit LGBTQ+ characters or representations of non-straight relationships. It focuses on traditional masculine roles centered around seasonal labor and family issues.
The narrative emphasizes the roles of male protagonists, reflecting the gendered labor divisions of the 1960s. Although family problems suggest the presence of women, the story primarily centers on the social pressures faced by men.
The film offers a detailed look at internal migration by highlighting workers from Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Macedonia. It explores the tensions between these groups and the local Slovenian population.
Through social realism, the film critiques regional hierarchies and economic inequality. It challenges the notion of a unified social fabric by depicting the discrimination faced by migrant workers.
There is no information indicating the presence of physical or neurodivergent disabilities in this work.
