Wang Chao’s film is a work of stark social realism that emphasizes the systemic disenfranchisement of individuals. It avoids sanitized depictions of family life, instead focusing on the friction caused by rapid modernization and market reforms. The film’s strength lies in its deconstruction of economic hierarchies. Though it lacks contemporary identity-based representation, it provides a localized perspective on poverty and the shortcomings of social safety nets. Ultimately, the narrative structure highlights the struggles of those on the margins of society, offering a gritty, secular look at survival in a changing economy.

The cast is predominantly of a single ethnicity, but the film provides a crucial non-Western viewpoint. It centers on the struggles of the Chinese working class and urban poor.
The narrative offers a harsh critique of institutional and economic systems. It replaces idealized social stability with a world driven by transactional morality and survival.
