Complexes employs the satirical style of Commedia all'italiana to critique mid-century Italian social norms. By featuring a police raid subplot, the film addresses LGBTQ+ themes and disrupts the straight-centered expectations of its era. The film also critiques institutional corruption through a story about a qualified individual being unfairly sidelined from a position of influence. This provides a sharp critique of systemic unfairness. However, the film's gender representation remains tied to traditional romantic clichés, and there is no visible evidence of racial or ethnic diversity in the provided narrative.
