Fair

A mixed-gender ensemble is utilized, though character dynamics lean on established horror tropes. Rea is a central figure, but her agency remains largely reactive to supernatural threats.

Good

The production achieves high ethnic authenticity by centering an Indonesian cast. It grounds its supernatural elements in local traditions rather than importing foreign tropes.

AI Analysis

Tusuk Jelangkung is a genre-focused exploration of Indonesian folklore that prioritizes cultural specificity over social subversion. It succeeds in grounding its horror in local traditions, using the Jelangkung doll to create a narrative that feels authentically rooted in its setting. However, the film relies heavily on conventional archetypes. The character dynamics follow standard horror tropes, and the narrative lacks intersectional complexity. While it celebrates local identity, it does not challenge traditional social hierarchies or gender roles. Ultimately, the film serves as a culturally authentic piece of genre cinema that lacks representation for LGBTQ+ identities and disabilities, focusing instead on a narrow, traditional ensemble.
