LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

Gender Representation

Fair

Female protagonists like Maya drive the horror experience. However, these characters often align with traditional horror tropes of vulnerability rather than subverting gender hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The production features a predominantly Indonesian cast and setting. It provides regional authenticity by centering Southeast Asian cultural and religious identities.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative is deeply rooted in Islamic practices and religious morality. It reinforces established theological norms rather than exploring moral relativism or secularism.

Strengths

  • High levels of regional authenticity through an Indonesian cast and setting.
  • Effective use of local cultural and religious nuances as a narrative foundation.
  • Avoids Western-centric horror homogeneity by centering Southeast Asian identity.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks intersectional complexity or the deconstruction of traditional social norms.
  • Gender dynamics lean toward traditional tropes of female vulnerability.
  • Does not explore diverse identities, including LGBTQ+ or disability representation.

AI Analysis

Makmum succeeds in providing authentic Indonesian representation, moving away from Western-centric horror tropes by utilizing local cultural nuances. The setting and religious context feel grounded in a specific regional identity. However, the film operates within conservative social and religious structures. It prioritizes traditional hierarchies and singular moralities, which limits its intersectional complexity. While the female lead is central to the plot, the character dynamics lean toward traditional depictions of vulnerability. The film lacks progressive subversions of institutional or social norms.
