War Horse is a historically accurate drama set in the early 20th century. While it effectively critiques the futility of war and the senselessness of nationalist conflict, it does so through a narrow Eurocentric lens. The film relies heavily on traditional masculine archetypes and a homogeneous cast. It captures the harsh realities of the Great War but fails to explore diverse social structures or multi-layered identities. Ultimately, the work functions as a humanist tragedy focused on the shared suffering of soldiers rather than a diverse exploration of identity.
Category Breakdown
The film adheres to a traditional, straight-centered framework without including LGBTQ+ characters or depicting queer intimacy.
Male characters hold the primary roles within the cavalry and trenches. Female characters typically play supporting or domestic roles without driving the main storyline.
The cast is predominantly Anglo-Saxon and Western European, lacking non-white perspectives or characters that reflect multiple aspects of diversity.
The narrative challenges the idea of the 'enemy' by showing British and German soldiers as equally affected by war. It emphasizes the humanistic tragedy of war.
Physical and psychological traumas are shown as consequences of war. However, these injuries are not given independent roles or a detailed exploration of their impact on individuals.
