Synopsis

Intermissions follows Lula during the hectic election campaign for the presidency in 2002. Lula gave filmmaker João Moreira Salles and his crew complete access, and the result is an intimate documentary of what went on behind the scenes. Sometimes, Lula is afraid that he will lose his freedom as president. Combined with Lula's candor, the film's observational style provides some very special insight into one of Brazil's most popular leaders.

AI Analysis

Intermissions offers a sophisticated, observational study of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during his 2002 presidential campaign. It moves beyond traditional political hagiography to examine the human anxieties inherent in the transition of power. The film succeeds by providing a nuanced, non-Western perspective on democratic mechanics. It avoids celebratory tropes, instead focusing on the tension between individual agency and institutional constraints. While the film is deeply rooted in the socio-political fabric of the Global South, it remains centered on a singular political figure, which limits the breadth of its demographic representation.
