Soul of the Game is a powerful exploration of racial ability to act centered around African American athletes during a pivotal moment in American history. By focusing on the transition from the Negro Leagues to Major League Baseball, the film challenges traditional, Anglo-centric sports narratives. However, the film is heavily influenced by its historical setting, which limits its gender and LGBTQ+ representation. Despite this, the film’s strength lies in its commitment to dismantling racial hierarchies, even as it remains a product of its time.
