Roberto Gavaldón's direction blends genres in a sophisticated manner, moving beyond conventional horror clichés. The film highlights women's ability to drive the story by placing older women in powerful roles within the household. However, it leans on traditional character types like the 'mad scientist,' which can perpetuate stereotypes. Additionally, the film lacks explicit markers of characters who reflect more than one aspect of diversity and detailed information about the ethnic diversity of the supporting cast. Overall, it offers a unique perspective by emphasizing psychological complexity and regional authenticity.
