New Showbiz Analysis

How It All Began serves as a historical account of the introduction of Taoist Internal Alchemy to the West. Its primary strength lies in its cultural and racial representation, documenting the transfer of Eastern spiritual practices into a Western urban environment. The film acts as a bridge between different traditions, focusing on Master Mantak Chia and the cultural landscape of New York City's Chinatown. This focus effectively counters the dominance of Western-centric wellness narratives. However, the documentary does not engage with LGBTQ+ themes or challenge traditional gender roles. While it offers a valuable record of non-Western intellectual traditions, it remains a specialized study of a particular lineage.

Official Synopsis

At a time in history when Yoga was practiced in basements and martial arts were found mainly in the movies, Taoist Internal Alchemy was not accessible to the western world. This was the time Master Mantak Chia came to America with a dream to share Taoist wisdom. Early seekers of the Tao found him in a small office in New York City's Chinatown and the Healing Tao system was born and another bridge was formed between east and west.
