Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.3/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks any discernible engagement with queer subtext or non-heteronormative identities. The narrative focuses entirely on a supernatural framework within a closed group of female students.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story disrupts traditional hierarchies by centering its narrative agency on a female ensemble. These women occupy roles of high psychological intensity, moving away from common horror tropes like the damsel in distress.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Set in 1930s England, the cast is predominantly white to reflect the historical setting of an elite British boarding school. The film does not utilize color-blind casting or introduce diverse ethnic perspectives.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The film explores spiritualism and mediumship rather than organized religious institutions. This focus on individualistic metaphysical experiences suggests a leaning toward secular or non-specific spirituality.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no representation of physical or neurodivergent disabilities within the character arcs. Characters are defined by social connections and reactions to the supernatural rather than through disability.

Strengths

  • The film centers its narrative agency on a female ensemble.
  • Women are placed in roles of high psychological intensity.
  • The story avoids the common 'damsel in distress' horror trope.

Areas for Improvement

  • The cast lacks racial and ethnic diversity.
  • There is no representation of physical or neurodivergent disabilities.
  • The film lacks engagement with LGBTQ+ themes or identities.

AI Analysis

Seance functions primarily as a period-specific horror piece. While it provides meaningful female-centric agency by placing women in central, high-intensity roles, it remains tethered to traditional cinematic structures. The film's adherence to historical demographic norms limits its intersectional depth. By reflecting the homogeneity of a 1930s British boarding school, it misses opportunities to introduce diverse ethnic or queer perspectives. Ultimately, the narrative prioritizes internal psychological terror and spiritualism over systemic critiques or identity-driven storytelling, resulting in a traditional, albeit female-led, experience.
