AI Analysis

Soul Boy is a work of social realism that avoids sanitized depictions of its setting. It uses a domestic tragedy to explore how extreme poverty and tribalism influence individual agency and interpersonal relationships. The film's strength lies in its sophisticated engagement with identity politics. By centering the narrative on the friction between different tribes, it provides a nuanced look at intersectional identity within an African context. However, the film's focus remains narrow. While it explores systemic instability and the breakdown of the family unit, it offers little insight into gender agency or LGBTQ+ themes.
