New Showbiz Analysis

Wojciech Has delivers a surrealist, psychological study that prioritizes existential inquiry over traditional narrative arcs. The film succeeds in deconstructing social and religious stability through its protagonist's nihilism, offering a sophisticated critique of 19th-century certainty. However, the work remains demographically narrow. It adheres to the historical homogeneity of its period and focuses almost exclusively on the internal life of a single male intellectual, limiting the breadth of its social representation. Ultimately, the film's value lies in its intellectual depth rather than demographic variety. It trades conventional identity-based representation for a complex, relativistic exploration of the human psyche.

Official Synopsis

A well-known professor of medicine finding himself at the threshold of autumn of his life, takes stock of his achievements and experiences. "In the end it ends with what has been known for a long time: that conscious life without a fixed worldview is not life, but torment, horror. - wrote Anton Chekhov in one of his letters summarizing "An Uninteresting Story". The protagonist, Professor Nikolai Stepanovich, is a character characteristic of Chekhov's entire oeuvre - a Russian intellectual from the late nineteenth century, depressed by boredom and a sense of his own uselessness and the meaninglessness of his existence.
