New Showbiz Analysis

Silent City centers on a cross-cultural character study focusing on an outsider's struggle for ability to act. The film highlights the friction between a Western protagonist and a traditional, hierarchical Japanese culinary institution. While the film lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or disabilities, it offers a progressive perspective on gendered ability to act. It challenges established power structures by featuring a woman in a demanding, hierarchical professional setting. The film's strengths lie in its nuanced exploration of cultural displacement and the journey of navigating an unfamiliar social hierarchy.
