On a night of April 1957, Albertine, a brillant and rebel 19-year-old girl, jumps from the wall of the prison where she’s serving a sentence for a holdup. In her fall, a bone from her ankle breaks: the astragal. She is rescued by Julien, a justice fugitive, and so is born a burning passion between them. He takes her to Paris and hides her. But while he leads his gangster life here and there, the young woman struggles for her freedom and against the wounds inflicted by Julien’s absence, and writes poetry.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film centers on a passionate romantic bond between Albertine and Julien. While the narrative avoids explicit queer identities, its focus on social non-conformity suggests a departure from sanitized, traditional romance.
Gender Representation
Albertine is portrayed as a brilliant, rebellious intellectual rather than a passive love interest. Her arc emphasizes her pursuit of poetry and personal freedom over her relationship with Julien.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
Set in 1957 Paris, the story follows characters living on the fringes of society. While specific ethnic details are not provided, the focus on fugitives suggests a view of social stratification.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative critiques institutional authority by centering on prisoners and fugitives. It prioritizes individual passion and poetic truth over the stability of traditional Western social structures.
Disability Representation
A broken ankle bone serves as a pivotal catalyst for the protagonist's journey. This physical vulnerability is integrated into her identity as a rebel rather than used for simple melodrama.

AI Analysis
Brigitte Sy’s film excels in character-driven storytelling, particularly through the intellectual agency of its female lead. Albertine is defined by her rebellion and creative spirit, subverting typical romantic tropes. The film also offers a compelling critique of social and legal institutions. By focusing on characters existing outside the law, it explores themes of personal liberation and subjective morality. However, the narrative lacks explicit detail regarding broader demographic intersectionality. While the characters occupy the social margins, specific information on racial or LGBTQ+ identities remains limited.
