Gamera: Guardian of the Universe is a genre-driven ecological thriller that prioritizes biological realism over social subversion. Its strength lies in its sophisticated deconstruction of monster movie clichés through an evolutionary lens. While the film lacks diverse representation or LGBTQ+ identities, it provides meaningful roles to its female leads, preventing them from falling into passive or victimized roles common in the genre. However, the narrative remains anchored in traditional hierarchies and a homogeneous Japanese cast. It functions as a grounded science fiction piece rather than a vehicle for identity politics.
