Awakenings is a humanistic drama that shines in its empathetic portrayal of neurological impairment. By focusing on the patients' perspectives, the film avoids clichéd storylines and captures the profound disorientation of their condition. While the film successfully challenges traditional mid-century medical hierarchies, it remains limited by its historical context. The absence of LGBTQ+ and racial diversity reflects the era's demographic uniformity, offering little engagement with diverse identities. Ultimately, the film emphasizes the dignity of neurodivergent individuals, making it a powerful yet narrowly focused biographical drama.
