Blank-faced bug killer Bill Lee and his dead-eyed wife, Joan, like to get high on Bill's pest poisons while lounging with Beat poet pals. After meeting the devilish Dr. Benway, Bill gets a drug made from a centipede. Upon indulging, he accidentally kills Joan, takes orders from his typewriter-turned-cockroach, ends up in a constantly mutating Mediterranean city and learns that his hip friends have published his work -- which he doesn't remember writing.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film rejects heteronormative stability through fluid, unsettling depictions of intimacy. It avoids conventional romantic structures, favoring a fragmented exploration of connection that disrupts standard gendered expectations.
Gender Representation
Traditional noir archetypes are subverted, particularly through Mœ, who possesses agency rather than acting as a mere object. Masculinity is deconstructed via Bill Lee’s vulnerability, addiction, and lack of control.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The Interzone setting functions as a non-specific space that resists traditional ethnic categorization. While avoiding stereotypes, the film lacks visible, intersectional racial diversity that drives the plot.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative critiques Western institutions and authority through a lens of moral relativism. It presents a corrupt, dehumanizing world where the commodification of intellectual labor is a central theme.
Disability Representation
Neurodivergence and altered states are explored through addiction and paranoia. The protagonist's struggle with sensory perception provides a harrowing look at non-normative cognitive experiences.

AI Analysis
David Cronenberg’s work excels at deconstructing social and biological norms. By replacing traditional morality with situational ethics, the film successfully challenges the viewer's perception of truth and authority. The film's strength lies in its subversion of gender and cultural archetypes. It moves away from stable provider models of masculinity and critiques the oppressive nature of Western institutions. However, the surrealist setting limits racial depth. The focus on the biological and insectoid over socio-political identity results in a lack of intersectional agency within the narrative.
