Majid Majidi’s film is a powerful example of Iranian Neorealism, emphasizing the dignity of underrepresented individuals. It succeeds by presenting a non-Western perspective and offering a deep look at the socioeconomic disparities between rural and urban life. The film excels in its authentic portrayal of disability and cultural identity. By making a sensory impairment the central driver of the protagonist's journey, the story transcends simple tragedy to explore the intersection of physical need and economic opportunity. However, the film remains anchored in traditional social structures. It does not address LGBTQ+ themes or provide subversive depictions of gender, focusing instead on paternalistic duties and established domestic roles.
