En Garde is a sophisticated exploration of diverse identities, moving beyond simple clichés to examine how displacement and sensory differences shape a person's worldview. The film places characters like a Kurdish refugee in emotionally significant roles rather than as mere background figures. While it does not explicitly represent LGBTQ+ identities, it explores gendered social dynamics and the friction between secular individuals and religious institutions. The protagonist’s heightened hearing adds a layer of neurodivergent perspective that informs her role as an outsider. Ultimately, the film weaves together themes of migration, sensory perception, and the deconstruction of the 'outsider' cliché within a Western social framework.
