Paolo Virzì’s film succeeds as a social satire, using the telemarketing industry to critique the predatory nature of modern work ethics. It excels at challenging traditional gender roles by focusing on a woman's professional growth and questioning established masculine norms. However, the film is limited by its focus on a specific demographic, which is largely homogeneous. This lack of racial and ethnic diversity prevents the score from being higher. Additionally, while the film touches on psychological fragility, it does not fully explore LGBTQ+ identities or disability representation.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses more on economic struggles than on LGBTQ+ narratives. It lacks explicit representations of LGBTQ+ identities and central stories that challenge assumptions about straight relationships.
Marta stands out as a strong female lead in a male-dominated corporate environment. The film also critiques traditional masculinity through the character of Claudio.
The setting reflects a relatively homogeneous Italian population typical of its time. While it avoids obvious stereotypes, it lacks significant diversity in terms of race and ethnicity.
The story offers a sharp critique of late-stage capitalism and exploitative work cultures. It provides a nuanced look at institutional protections through its depiction of unionism.
The character Lucio '2' is portrayed as fragile, possibly indicating mental health issues. However, it is unclear if this portrayal fully captures the experience of neurodivergence.

Official Synopsis
25-year-old philosophy major Marta faces the ugly truth for many young Italians — a complete lack of career opportunities. While babysitting for single mother Sonia, she starts to work as a telemarketer, experiencing first-hand the fanatical and exploitative rat-race culture pushed on employees while quickly rising through the ranks of the company. Around her revolve people like delusional supervisor Daniela, her womanizing boss Claudio, fragile coworker Lucio "2", and well-meaning but inconsistent union rep Giorgio.
