Synopsis

Developed by scientists Harry and Meg, the "Quadrant" helmet allows your mind to transport you into a world where all your phobias and nightmares are real, while also granting you the strength to defeat them, liberating you from their control forever. But the Quadrant experiment is about to go horribly wrong. When Erin, a young girl who’s obsessed with Jack the Ripper uses the device to actually BECOME the Ripper, she unleashes a reign of terror, first in her mind in an AI version of old London created by the Quadrant, and then in reality, where she now stalks the contemporary city streets, seeking out victims for her blade. The only way to stop this savage new Ripper is for an even more vicious killer to enter the artificial Quadrant-verse and bring her down. What ensues is a brutal, bloody battle, murderer against murderer, both in this world and the surreal, dangerous, synthetic world of Quadrant!

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.6/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks any visible LGBTQ+ characters or narratives addressing non-cisnormative identities. The plot focuses entirely on the psychological mechanics of the protagonist's obsession.

Gender Representation

Fair

Erin subverts horror tropes by occupying a role of extreme, predatory agency. Instead of a victim, she adopts a violent persona, providing a dark exploration of female power.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

The narrative lacks evidence of a diverse or non-Anglo-Saxon majority cast. The settings of contemporary cities and old London suggest a homogeneous Western demographic.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story explores a skeptical view of technological progress and institutional safety. It presents a complex, non-traditional moral framework through the protagonist's descent into anti-social behavior.

Disability Representation

Limited

Psychological trauma and phobias serve primarily as plot drivers for horror. These elements lack nuanced depictions of neurodivergence, potentially using mental instability as a mere narrative device.

Strengths

  • Subverts traditional gender hierarchies by centering a female protagonist with extreme predatory agency.
  • Explores complex themes regarding the volatility of human obsession and technological failure.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks significant racial and ethnic diversity within the cast and settings.
  • Uses psychological instability as a horror device rather than providing nuanced mental health representation.
  • Provides no visible LGBTQ+ representation or non-cisnormative narratives.

AI Analysis

Quadrant is a genre-driven horror-sci-fi piece that prioritizes psychological terror over social inclusivity. Its primary strength lies in its subversion of gendered power dynamics, placing a female character in a position of dominant, predatory agency rather than a traditional victim role. However, the film fails to provide meaningful intersectional representation. The focus on a simulated old London and a contemporary urban setting, combined with a lack of diverse casting evidence, results in a narrow demographic scope. Ultimately, while the film offers a dark, relativistic look at human obsession and the failure of scientific institutions, it does not reach a threshold of progressive representation.
