O Último Animal operates primarily as a genre-driven crime thriller. It grounds the narrative in the socioeconomic realities of Rio de Janeiro's communities, providing a sense of racial and ethnic authenticity through its setting and protagonist. However, the film lacks intentionality regarding multifaceted identity-driven storytelling. It follows established crime clichés and masculine-centric archetypes rather than disrupting social hierarchies. Ultimately, while engaging with themes of systemic corruption and post-colonial dynamics, it prioritizes narrative momentum and genre conventions over deep social deconstruction.
