Apneia is a character-driven study that prioritizes the fragmented, subjective experience of the individual. It avoids traditional narrative stability in favor of exploring the edges of existence and consciousness. The film excels in its nuanced portrayal of a medical condition, using sleep apnea to drive the protagonist's internal experiences. This approach provides a deep psychological look at disability without falling into clichés. However, the film lacks visible markers of queer identity or explicit racial diversity. The narrative remains focused on internal, existential inquiry rather than overt identity-based representation.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include explicit representations of LGBTQ+ identities or relationships that go beyond the assumption that everyone is straight. The narrative focuses on the protagonist's internal struggles and existential questions.
The story centers on a female protagonist, Chris, whose role is defined by her biological limitations. Her actions and decisions are driven by her internal experiences rather than traditional male-centric action narratives.
No specific details are provided about the racial composition of the ensemble cast. The film adheres to a European cinematic tradition, maintaining a neutral level of representation.
The film explores subjective morality by rejecting traditional social rhythms like sleep. It prioritizes individual, subjective truth and existentialism over established institutional or societal norms.

Official Synopsis
Apnea presents a week in the life of Chris and her friends. Chris does not want to sleep. Afraid of her sleep apnea and her own unconsciousness, Chris stays up several nights in search of some sort of sense to her life that she did not see during the day, always living on the edge of her own body, and of existence itself, and dragging everything around with her.
