Good

Kristen serves as a central protagonist whose agency is tested by illness. The story subverts traditional roles as AJ adopts her passion for surfing to navigate their shared adversity.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The ensemble cast, including Birane Ba and Lyna Khoudri, points toward a multi-ethnic depiction of Los Angeles. This suggests a move away from homogeneous casting toward intersectional urban youth culture.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The narrative focuses on individual resilience and communal support through a connection to the ocean. It appears to prioritize naturalistic themes over traditional religious or institutional hierarchies.

Good

Kristen’s sudden illness drives the central plot. The film has the potential to portray physical vulnerability and chronic health challenges as catalysts for character growth rather than mere tragedy.

Strengths

  • Diverse ensemble casting featuring actors like Birane Ba and Lyna Khoudri.
  • Subversion of traditional gender roles through shared passions and shifting dynamics.
  • Focus on individual resilience and communal support during health crises.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of explicit confirmation regarding the protagonists' specific LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Potential for illness to be used as a mere plot device rather than nuanced character development.

AI Analysis

In Waves presents a character-driven narrative that leans into the emotional complexities of romance and sudden health crises. The film avoids static archetypes by allowing characters to adopt one another's passions to overcome adversity. The production benefits from a diverse cast and a setting that reflects a globalized urban environment. This multi-ethnic approach provides a more contemporary and intersectional lens on youth culture. While the film explores significant themes of illness and resilience, the depth of its social commentary remains tied to how it handles these medical pivots. It moves beyond simple tropes to focus on interpersonal connection.
