The Paternal House provides a culturally specific Iranian perspective, using local motifs such as carpet weaving to anchor its narrative. This ethnic specificity offers a strong counterpoint to Western-centric cinematic norms. However, the film faces challenges in representing gendered spaces, as female characters are largely restricted to domestic duties in the weaving cellar. While it critiques patriarchal violence, it does so without including LGBTQ+ or disability representation. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its nuanced deconstruction of the family unit. It transforms the romanticized idea of home into a haunting critique of systemic domestic dysfunction and generational trauma.
