Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film focuses entirely on a nuclear family within a rural setting. There is no presence of non-cisnormative identities or same-sex intimacy.

Gender Representation

Fair

While the family follows a patriarchal structure, the daughters are active participants rather than passive figures. The matriarch's death forces the women into high-stakes roles of responsibility.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The story depicts a homogeneous white, working-class community in the American South. The casting reflects the isolation typical of the folk-horror genre.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The narrative challenges Western morality by centering on a family practicing ritualistic cannibalism. It frames external social structures as intrusive forces against ancestral traditions.

Disability Representation

Minimal

The film explores psychological trauma and the mental toll of isolation. However, no specific physical or neurodivergent disabilities serve as central plot devices.

Strengths

  • Subverts traditional gender tropes by giving the female characters significant agency and responsibility.
  • Offers a sophisticated critique of Western institutional morality and social hierarchies.
  • Uses cultural homogeneity effectively to build atmospheric tension within the folk-horror genre.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks racial and ethnic diversity, presenting a strictly homogeneous white community.
  • Provides no representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative gender expressions.
  • Does not include specific portrayals of physical or neurodivergent disabilities.

AI Analysis

We Are What We Are is a demographically traditional film that finds its strength in narrative subversion. While it lacks racial and LGBTQ+ breadth, it succeeds in deconstructing the dichotomy between civilized law and ritualistic tradition. The film uses its homogeneous setting to heighten tension, making the family's isolation feel absolute. It avoids the trope of the passive female, instead placing women at the center of the family's survivalist rituals. Ultimately, the work functions as a critique of mainstream social order, portraying the family's anti-social behavior as a necessary preservation of their specific, harrowing culture.
