The Highwayman is a traditional period adventure that emphasizes romanticized historical conflict over multi-layered complexity. While it provides minor subversions of gendered clichés, the narrative remains largely aligned with conventional storytelling hierarchies. The film centers on individualistic adventure and class-based rebellion, lacking the systemic deconstruction or diverse character's ability to drive the story needed to transcend a standard Western historical framework. Ultimately, the story relies on established archetypes, focusing on a rogue protagonist and a high-born female lead within a traditional social structure.
