By centering queer and Jewish identities against the backdrop of the Third Reich, the film shifts the focus from military history to the lived experience of systemic oppression. The film successfully uses personal romance as a vehicle for political and social critique. It portrays the protagonists' defiance of state authority not just as a personal choice, but as a moral necessity for survival.
