The film effectively uses magical realism to advocate for cultural preservation and indigenous folklore. By focusing on a young girl's curiosity, it successfully shifts the narrative focus away from traditional male leadership structures. However, the film lacks broader representation of LGBTQ+ identities and diverse racial groups. The setting is deliberately limited to a specific Irish fishing community, which restricts its wider demographic scope. Overall, the work is a sophisticated examination of the tension between tradition and modernity, emphasizing ecological and mythological connections over contemporary institutional norms.
