Synopsis

Based on Jo Brand's critically acclaimed novel of the same name, The More You Ignore Me is a warm, comedy drama focusing on the life of an unconventional family in 1980s rural England. The film focuses on Gina, a young mother, whose efforts to be a loving mother and wife are undermined by her declining mental health. Things deteriorate when she develops an obsession with the local weatherman, which leads to an admission to the nearby psychiatric hospital. Over the years, as she grows up, her daughter Alice struggles to relate to her heavily medicated mum, and causes chaos when she comes up with a plan to reconnect with her, which divides the family forever and leads to a moving climax. Set to the songs of The Smiths, The More You Ignore Me provides a sometimes stark, yet comical insight into life within this quirky household, whilst addressing mental health issues and their impact on the family.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.7/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The narrative focuses on a traditional, albeit fractured, nuclear family structure. There is no explicit evidence of queer identities or non-heteronormative relationship dynamics within the story.

Gender Representation

Good

The film centers on Gina, a female protagonist whose psychological struggles disrupt the 'ideal wife and mother' archetype. It challenges the expectation of women serving as stable emotional anchors.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Set in 1980s rural England, the film reflects the demographic homogeneity of its era. The narrative appears focused on localized, culturally specific English experiences without intentional racial blending.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The story critiques the idealized Western family unit by portraying the household as a site of chaos. It explores individual identity against the backdrop of societal and medical institutions.

Disability Representation

Good

The film offers meaningful representation of mental health through Gina's psychiatric journey. It avoids 'inspiration porn,' opting instead for a stark and comical look at systemic and personal struggles.

Strengths

  • Provides a nuanced, non-traditional exploration of mental health and psychiatric institutionalization.
  • Challenges gendered expectations by deconstructing the 'ideal mother' archetype through Gina's struggles.
  • Offers a sophisticated critique of the traditional Western nuclear family structure.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ characters or non-heteronormative dynamics.
  • Reflects significant demographic homogeneity with minimal racial or ethnic diversity.
  • The historical setting limits the scope of cultural and social variety.

AI Analysis

The film succeeds as a character study that deconstructs domesticity and traditional gender roles. By centering on a woman's mental health decline, it provides a nuanced look at disability and the fragility of the nuclear family. However, the film is limited by its historical and geographic setting. The focus on 1980s rural England results in low racial and LGBTQ+ representation, reflecting the era's demographic homogeneity rather than active inclusion. Ultimately, the work trades broad social diversity for deep, empathetic exploration of specific psychological and familial complexities.
